Chapter Seven

After a long week that consisted of Jocelynn, Ava, and Oliver training every chance they got, Lynn decided it was time to change things up a bit and go have fun on their day off that Saturday. She had been making a few calls and arranged with Richie that Ava didn’t have to go back to Heather’s until the next day. Things were moving fast for the girl and her horse, they had an obvious connection and so they deserved a treat.

“Ava come on. Time for your surprise!” Lynn yelled as she entered the main house. Footsteps were heard from the stairs and soon the young girl, clad in jeans, boots and a tee shirt, was in front her and looking expectantly. “Let’s go outside. I’m sure you’ll have an idea by then.”

Richie had appeared behind his daughter and grinned. He had known the plans for a couple of days now and was sure his daughter would be ecstatic.  The teenager squealed as she opened the door and rushed outside. A horse trailer was behind the Hummer and in it was Oliver. His tack was in the trunk of the massive car and Ava turned around in shock.

“Where are we going?”

Jocelynn smiled. “There’s a ranch not far from here, they have great Quarters and a massive piece of land that’s fenced so a perfect place for a first trail ride with you and Oliver.”

She explained and Ava’s eyes went wide. “Everything we need is already in the car so let’s go.”

Ava grinned. “Dad letting you drive the Hummer?” Jocelynn nodded proudly. Richie was more than a little anxious when it came to someone driving his car so he and Lynn had been doing a few test rides around the block when Ava was in school. Jocelynn thought Ava was exaggerating when she told her about her dad’s tendencies but she was actually right. After a couple rides he muttered ‘Fine take it on Saturday’ and here they were. Dangling the keys from her index finger she grinned at the man in the doorway.

“I’ll take good care of her Rich.” She winked and Richie grumbled under his breath as the two women got into the car.

“Let’s go ride!” Lynn exclaimed as they drove through the gate. The ranch had assured her they had a calm and gentle horse who was very experienced in trail rides to guide Ava and Olly.

“Wow that’s a beauty Lynn!” Ava said as Jocelynn mounted the buckskin mare. Jocelynn grinned and clicked her tongue to get the horse to lead the inexperienced youngsters around the terrain. Today would only be a walking trip, everything was already exciting enough for both Ava and Oliver so this should be enough for the time being.

“Left or right?” Lynn asked as the sandy path split into two directions. Choosing the left path they let the horses walk side by side and chatted away as they watched Oliver check out over single bush and tree. He was relaxed as if he’d been doing it for years. The hills were stunning and soon enough they reached a peak and stopped to watch over part of the city.

“Don’t you love this Lynn? It’s so pretty.” Ava sighed as she gazed around. She was wearing her head protection but luckily also sunglasses or she wouldn’t be able to see a thing with the brightness that came from the massive bulb of fire above them. “Will you teach my dad to ride sometime?” Ava then asked.

Lynn grinned. “If he wants to, sure. You think he’s up for that?” They were now strolling back down the hill whilst chatting.

“I think so, he just might be a bit apprehensive to ask.” She replied smiling. “I think he likes you.”

Lynn’s jaw dropped and her eyes widened. She quickly composed herself and looked around the bushes. “Why would you say that?”

Ava noticed the change in her expression. She likes him too. “He’s nice to you, polite even. At times anyway. And I saw how he looks at you. He never looked that way at Denise.” She brought up the ex. Now Jocelynn was beet red and trying not to worry about the words of the teenager.

“Hey Ava let’s take a right here? That looks like a nice path.” Ava got the not-so-subtle hint and nodded as he followed Jocelynn and the Buckskin Quarter. Then out of nowhere a deer appeared from the bushed and ran two feet in front of Oliver. The elder horse stayed calm but Ava had trouble hanging on to Olly. He took off running in a full gallop and Ava tried her best to get him to slow down, although when she did, he bucked up his rear end following by rearing. Ava held onto the knob on the saddle but as he raised up higher she was unable to hold on and fell backwards onto the hard sandy ground.

Jocelynn was already next to Oliver, hoping the elder horse could calm him down but it was already too late. Ava was squirming on the ground and groaning in pain. Lynn jumped off the horse and grabbed Oliver’s reins. The poor horse was as shocked by his rider falling as the rider was herself and didn’t dare to move an inch. “Ava are you okay? Where does it hurt?” Lynn asked as she tied both horses to a nearby tree and kneeling next to the blonde girl.

Ava groaned as she tried to sit up and groaned. “My chest, I think something’s wrong with my ribs and my head hurts.” Lynn nodded and pulled out her phone. Ava was a tough one and had fallen off before but never was she not able to get up again. Calling the owner of the ranch with their location and asking him to come pick Ava up with the truck she winced as she saw the youngest facial expression turn sour.

“Head protection can only protect so much. You might still have a concussion. Jason is on his way with the truck. Just try to stay still. We’re gonna take you to the hospital. Let me call your dad real quick. ” Handing her a bottle of water from a saddle bag she smiled slightly. “Drink a bit.”

“Thanks. Do you have to call my dad?” Ava asked quietly, wincing as she swallowed the water.

Lynn nodded. “I’m afraid I do. He won’t be pleased if he finds out something is wrong when I get you home in a cast.” She grinned. Ava nodded and handed Jocelynn her phone.

“How is my babygirl? What happened? How did this happen? I thought they were ready for this?”

Lynn sighed and stared at the floor. “Richie I’m sorry, they were totally ready and everything was going just fine until a deer came out of nowhere and spooked Oliver. He was real sweet after she fell though, wouldn’t leave her side.” She spoke and slowly looked up to meet his eyes.

Jon appeared behind his friend and laid a hand on his shoulder. “Do we know anything already?” Lynn had brought Ava into the E.R. about fifteen minutes ago and the doctors had taken her for all kinds of scans, not telling her anything. She had been sitting in an all white waiting area with people who were crying and looking around nervously. Even the most laid-back person would be freaked out by this atmosphere.

The woman shrugged. “Not too much. She’s been taken for scans to make sure nothing is broken or bleeding on the inside. She showed no signs of any serious damage though. She might have a concussion and bruised ribs.”

Jon smiled. “See man, your baby girl is a tough one.” He motioned for the guitarist to take a seat and sat down beside him. “Are you okay too?”

Both sets of blue eyes met and Lynn nodded. “I’m fine, just worried about her. She was making so much progress, I just hope she won’t be scared to get to riding once she’s better.”

“Even with a cast she’d go riding.” Richie spoke with a slight grin. “Girl is stubborn.” His hair was all over the place and there were lines of worry rounding his eyes but with a dimpled grin he looked like he did twenty years back.

“Wonder who she got that from.” Lynn chuckled and Jon laughed. Richie just shot her a look as a middle aged man in a white lab coat appeared next to them.

Chapter Six

Ava rushed down the stairs of the large L.A. house, laptop under her arm. Dressed in baby blue pajama pants and a white tank top with white fluffy slippers she barged in the lounge area only to find it empty.

Turning on her heels she headed for the kitchen. Finding only Rosa, cleaning up the dishes from dinner. The woman told her to check in the studio, being pretty certain she could find her father there. Ava did as she was told and headed down a flight of stairs and through a soundproofed door. She squealed in joy as it was not only her dad in there, but also his best friend.

“Uncle Jon! Why didn’t you tell me you came?” She rushed over to the caramel blonde man after setting the laptop on a coffee table and wrapped her arms around his neck.

Jon Bongiovi smiled at the reaction of the teenager. “Blame your dad for that, he’s known for two days now.” Setting her down on the floor he looked her up and down. “Have you grown again? Any more now and you’re like Steph.” He noted with a smile.

Ava grinned. “I’m gonna be as tall as you are Uncle Jon. Has dad told you about Oliver?” She asked hopefully. Knowing those two mostly talked about work it was a long shot.

Jon nodded as he glanced over at his friend. “Of course he told me about your horse!” He exclaimed happily. Remembering little about conversations about the horse but more about the trainer. “Gonna haul him up there as well someday?” He nudged the man next to him and Ava fell into a fit of laughter.

“Yeah right, like he’d get on. Either his pants will rip while mounting or he’ll fall off on the other side.” She giggled while her father glared at her before picking her up and tickling her sides. Jon’s head fell back and deep laughter filled the room.

Richie put his daughter back on her feet and crossed his arms in front of his chest, pulling out his lower lip. “I would be an excellent rider.” He stated. Jon and Ava shared a look and once again fell into fits of laughter, tears running down their cheeks. Richie huffed and took off towards the kitchen for a bottle of water.

Strolling back into the room carrying three bottles of water he saw his daughter sitting next to Jon on the couch, laptop open on the coffee table. They were scanning through the photo’s Jocelynn took of Ava’s first time riding Oliver solo.

Jocelynn.

She had just disappeared on him that afternoon. She didn’t come to dinner or show up at all during the rest of the day. They had made a connection that afternoon and she must have felt it as strongly as he did but that didn’t explain her running off like that. He snapped from his thoughts as Ava laughed at something Jon had said.

“Lemme see baby girl. You did so well.” He sat next to his daughter and kissed her temple.

Jon grinned. “Looks like you’re a real life cowgirl Ava. Those are some cool boots.” He commented on Ava’s square toe leather riding boots. They had pink stitching that was done subtly just to make it more girly.

Richie was in awe, the photos were not only perfect because it was his baby girl, they were also a great quality. Jocelynn sure knew how to work a professional camera that was for sure.  “Ava sweetie, why don’t you go over to the guest house for a bit and ask Lynn if she’ll join us all for breakfast tomorrow? She can meet Uncle Jon and you can ask her if she wants to come along to the beach.”

Ava jumped up and smiled widely. “Sure dad, back in a minute.” She kissed his cheek in  joy and headed out the door.

Jon chuckled. “Real subtle bro.”

The guitar players eyebrows rose as he stared blankly at his friend. “What the hell are you talkin bout?” Richie spoke. “Jet lag getting to ya?” Jon chuckled and shook his head.

Truthfully Jocelynn wasn’t sure what the hell she was doing in front of the Sambora household. After yesterday’s events with Richie she doubted coming in at all but Ava had been persistent and wouldn’t take ‘no’ for an answer. So there she was, wearing a pale yellow sundress with flipflops and her pale pink bikini already under the dress. Her beach bag was filled with all the essentials.

Knocking on the massive front door she waited nervously. Sure as hell luck wasn’t on her side. Richie opened the door and stood speechless. Ava never came to confirm Jocelynn’s plans so he assumed she wasn’t coming. But there she was, dressed casually sexy. Her hair curled over her shoulder and blue eyes were hidden behind Ray-ban’s.

Opening the door a bit wider he forced a smile. “Come in, Ava’s been excited about you joining us today.”

Jocelynn stepped inside and waited in front of the tall dark haired man. “Thank you for inviting me Richie. Ava is very persistent.”

Richie held up his hand and sighed. “She sure is. Come on in, breakfast is ready.” Turning he walked down the hallway to, what she remembered, was the kitchen. His broad chest was covered in his tight faded black t-shirt. Cross dangling on his chest. Shaking her head to clear her head she closed the door, dropped the bag and followed him into the kitchen where Rosa had prepared breakfast as if twenty people were coming.

Ava was wearing denim shorts and a white babydoll while munching on a piece of blueberry pancake. Next to her was a blonde man. Muscular chest visible through the few undone buttons of his navy blue sleeveless shirt.

He looked up and blue eyes matching hers stared at her in delight. Getting up from the stool he outstretched his hand. “You must be Jocelynn.” He exclaimed excitedly. “I’m Jon.”

It took Lynn some time to find her voice. Realization struck as she noticed she was in a kitchen about to have breakfast with two of the hottest men in rock and roll. Slightly star struck for the first time since she came here, she shook his hand. “Lynn is fine with me. Nice to meet you.”

Breakfast conversation wasn’t too difficult. Jon seemed genuinely interested in what she did aside from training horses and Ava was keen on finding out more about Lynn. The front man told her how impressed he was with her photos. Lynn could do nothing but blush and smile.

Not gonna tell him about that one time. None of their business. I won’t let them think I’m some groupie.

After finishing her orange juice and putting the glass in the sink Ava and the two men rose from their stools as well and they poured out of the house and into Richie’s massive black Hummer. Ava pulled on her hand and they occupied the backseat of the car leaving Jon and Richie to discuss work related things in the front.

Later that night, after they all had dinner together, the group piled on the couches in the living room to watch Iron Man. It had turned out to be a good day for the beach, seeking a secluded area the girls were talking horse language as the sun worked on their tan while the men dove into the salty water. After returning home Rosa had prepared dinner and they decided on a movie to watch.

Ava curled up next to her dad with Jon on the other side of the couch and Jocelynn was curled up in the plush chair. It didn’t take long before Ava fell asleep and was followed by Lynn. The men grinned at each other.

“Man you’re so screwed.” Jon spoke once the movie was over.

Richie raised his brows and shook his head. “No idea what you’re talking about man. How about you get Ava in her bed and I’ll wake Jocelynn.”

“How about you get your shining armor out first?” He joked as he lifted the teenager in her arms and exited the room.

Shaking his head, Richie moved over to the chair and shook the woman softly. “Lynn wake up, let’s get you to bed.” He whispered. Jocelynn stirred but didn’t wake up. Letting out a sigh he let his right arm curl around her back while his left arm supported her long toned legs. The woman curled herself into his body and continued to snooze.

Richie looked around and figured he wasn’t gonna be able to carry her all the way in to the guest house so one of the spare bedrooms would have to make due. Walking up the stairs he saw Jon pulling the covers over Ava’s sleeping body and smiled. Placing Jocelynn onto the bed of one of the spare bedrooms he pulled up the covers and hesitated before dropping a soft kiss on the top of her head and closing the door behind him as he left.

Chapter Five

Los Angeles, May 2012.

Oliver had been training with Lynn for two weeks now. He was slowly becoming accustomed to saddles and even the weight of a rider on his back. Ava had been a great help in guiding him as Jocelynn sat on his back before handing her the reins and strolling around with the Quarter. Today was Saturday and Lynn had told Ava that she was going to ride him for the first time. Richie was less than amused as Ava told him this at dinner the day before but he trusted Lynn’s opinion so he didn’t say anything of it.

Lynn called Jack earlier to tell him about the progress they made with Oliver. He’d been one of the most gentle horses she’d met and it seemed like everything was fun to him.  Stepping out of the guesthouse in loose jeans and a tight black tee shirt, Jocelynn it was hard not to notice the shouting come from the main house as she passed it.

She couldn’t make out any words but it was definitely Richie and a female. A very angry female it seemed. Swearing loudly she cussed at the rocker and Richie’s deep voice raised as hers did. Jocelynn shook her head and continued walking towards the stables. It was a short walk and when arriving she noticed Ava, as usual, had been there to feed Olly. Though she was nowhere to be seen right now Lynn took the horse from his stable and grabbed some brushes from the tack room.

Richie had saved no expense in tack and gotten nothing but the best for his little girl. Ava had picked out a beautiful V brow headstall, finished with silver buckles and concho’s. Though Olly was being taught to ride without a bit it wouldn’t be long before she would use that one with a gentle snaffle bit. Also there was a tree-less saddle to fit the horse’s still growing back and an assortment of different colored pads and leg protection. Picking out the black wraps and brown Navajo print pad she got the horse ready for another training.

Stepping into the corral she carefully placed her camera bag on the outside and mounted the horse. After about ten minutes she saw Ava approaching with both of her parents. Olly’s ears turned towards the movement and Jocelynn slowed their pace to a walk instead of a jog.

“You ready Ava?” Jocelynn asked as her feet hit the ground. Ava nodded happily and Richie smiled with pride. “Go grab your head protection just to be safe.” The woman instructed and Ava disappeared into the barn.

Richie cleared his throat. “Jocelynn, this is Heather. Ava’s mom.” Pointed at the blonde woman next to him, Jocelynn definitely saw where Ava got her eyes from. “Heather, this is Jocelynn, she’s been training Ava’s horse for the past two weeks...according to Ava she’s doing a really got job.” He shrugged and smiled at Lynn.

Walking towards the edge of the corral she climbed up a bit, keeping the reins in her left hand, and extended her right for Heather to shake. The woman looked at her skeptically but shook her hand none the less. “It’s nice to meet you Heather. Ava will love it that you’re both here to see her ride Olly for the first time.”

Heather frowned. “I hope you know what you’re doing lady, if my daughter falls you will be responsible.”
Jocelynn wasn’t taken back by the comment. That was something she’d heard plenty times before. “I am aware but as you will see, Oliver is a real gentle horse with a cool head. And she has been on his back before, but with a leadrope. He behaved perfectly so now she will ride solo. I have complete faith in both of them.”

Oliver had come closer to the edge of the corral and poked his nose through. Richie grinned and stroked the soft flesh. Tucking his hand in the back pocket of his jeans he pulled out a treat for the horse, who appreciatively chewed it up after carefully using his lips to take it from the man’s hands.

“I’m ready Lynn. Let’s get to work!” Ava pumped her fist in the air and Jocelynn could swear she heard Richie chuckle behind her.

“Alrighty then. Hop on and just walk around a bit, using the reins for neck roping and keeping your legs fairly still. Just subtly push if steering.” Jocelynn explained as Ava mounted effortlessly.

Walking over to the outside of the corral she took the Canon from her bag and positioned herself on the top of the fence. Ava was calm as ever and Oliver behaved better than usual with her, it seemed as if he could sense how important this particular meeting was. When a few rounds were done in a walking pace Jocelynn motioned for Ava to try a slow jog. Moving her hands forward slightly Olly had more room with the reins and Ava clicking her tongue did the trick. The teen let out a quiet squeal of delight and rode a few rounds. Every now and then making him stop and then go on, first in a walk, then jog. Soon enough she clicked extra after a gently stop and Olly was off in a jog.

Jocelynn was clicking away on the camera, capturing the looks of joy on Ava’s face. The last one captured her parents too, in the background. Heather looking bored with a frown on her face, Richie grinning with pride. Such different people, how the two of them ever had a happy marriage Jocelynn wondered. Quickly scolding herself for the thought. Not your business!

“You can let him cool down now Ava. Olly’s done a wonderful job today so this is enough for him.” Jocelynn spoke.

Ava nodded. “Easy.” She said as she sat more firmly in the saddle. Oliver slowed his pace and Ava loosened the reins even more. “You got some good shots?”

The woman behind the camera nodded. “Sure did. I’ll send ‘em to your laptop later today.” Tucking the black device away she walked over to where Richie was leaning on the fence and Heather pushing the screen of her phone. “So rockstar, when are you gonna get up?” Lynn asked with a daring smile.

Richie laughed and even Heather looked up from the phone. “Dunno darlin. Ya gonna teach me a thing or two?” He grinned at her and Jocelynn placed her hands on her hips.

“I don’t see why not! At least then Ava will be thoroughly amused. Although I don’t think your band will be too pleased if you’ve cracked your ribs, broken a leg and have a concussion.” She winked and strolled over to the side of the barn where she got everything ready for Ava to hose down the young horse. She had seen her come off as she walked away and after a quick chat with her parents guided the horse to the side and took off the bit-less headstall and swing on a halter. Securing him carefully she reached for the hose.

Both parents followed her and after a kiss on the cheek Heather said she was heading back home and, without another word to either Richie or Jocelynn, she left. Jocelynn watched her go and quietly asked Ava for the hose. Knowing what was on her mind Ava complied. Lynn and her dad have been going at it with pranks and silly jokes since that first night in the pool.

Reaching over the horse she turned the switch on the hose to it became more direct and aimed at the brown haired guitar player. Swearing he ducked but it was too late. He was drenched in cold water. Lynn handled the hose from another angle now and kept spraying. Olly was done anyway and Ava was busying herself on getting the excess water off him. Grinning she turned around just in time to see her dad launch himself over to the woman and battle her for the hose. She wouldn’t give up without a fight so Richie had to dodge more loads of water coming his way.

The teen took the horse by the rope and led him inside the barn and towards his stable. Opening up the outside door too Olly was able to reach his paddock and run around on his own to blow of some steam after a serious training.

Jocelynn shrieked as Richie got a hold of the hose, his big and strong hands covering hers. Staring her dead in the eyes she met his soft brown ones. He offered an apologetic smile before turning their grip so the water was directed at her face and shirt. Seconds later, she too, was soaked to the bone. The water flow stopped soon which indicated Ava was cleaning up the tack and turned off the water supply.

Standing rooted to the ground Jocelynn was incapable of looking away now. Richie’s lips looked so soft and inviting. Keep it together Jocelynn. He’s your boss. That’s it. Backing away quickly, she made a muttered excuse about checking on Ava and finshing cleaning up the barn before turning and quickly walking back towards the barn, leaving a very confused Richie in her wake.

Chapter Four

Dinner was delicious and passed uneventfully. Both Richie and Ava were asking Lynn a dozen questions at a time. They wanted to know all about her horseback riding history--barrel racing at the rodeos included. Ava was asking all the right questions while Richie asked more obvious ones which earned him an embarrassed look from his daughter.

After dinner Ava showed Lynn the guesthouse. A part of the house which was still attached but had a separate front door and its own living room, kitchen, two bedrooms and a spacious bathroom. Lynn was in awe and the younger one giggled. “Daddy likes to make sure our guests are comfortable. Will you meet me out back for a swim?” She leaned against the doorframe and smiled shyly.

Joselynn turned around and nodded. “Sure will. Let me just change quickly and I’ll see you there?” She spoke and Ava nodded before turning around and into the main house looking for her new bikini. With rare moments of girl time Ava decided to show off what her dad had given her.

Inside the guest house Lynn was picking through her suitcase whilst silently cussing. There had to be something more appropriate for a relaxing swim instead of her sporty bathing suit. After most of its contents were lying around on the bed she found was she was looking for and smiled.

Richie had first scolded Ava for asking Lynn for a swim. Mentioning something about putting her in an uncomfortable position and making her feel compelled to join. After a quick explanation of who-said-what Richie was quite satisfied with his daughter. Changing into swim trunks as well he grabbed a large towel before heading out into the backyard only to find it empty. Women.

Lynn stepped out of the guesthouse wrapped in a large fluffy towel. She had a great body but in a rock-star’s house she felt slightly uncomfortable and self-conscious. Stepping around the extra part of the house she noticed a tan muscular body on a bed by the pool and Ava already in the water. The sun was slowly starting to set but someone had already turned on a few lights. Ava’s head shot out of the water as she saw Lynn appearing.

“Hey Lynn! Come in the water, it’s soooo nice.” Letting her words linger she ducked down and swam in a straight line just to where Richie was laying, in all his glorious nature. Lynn shook her head and greeted them both with a soft smile. Seeing Ava’s deep blue sparkly bikini she was glad not to have worn the other bathing suit.

Richie lowered his sunglasses and smiled. “You know…” He started in his ever so deep but smooth voice. “Swimming is quite the challenge with a towel wrapped around ya.” He grinned like a little boy and Lynn couldn’t help but chuckle and blush.

“Yeah well, maybe I like challenges.” She winked. Walking over to a futon she unwrapped the towel and after folding it casually she dropped it on the armrest. Ava whistled as the towel was away from her body. Black bikini, not too skimpy, with tiny beads on the top and around the waistband of the bottom. Sitting down on the edge of the pool Jocelynn let her feet dangle in the water, which was surprisingly warm given the time of the day. “Ava will you come help me tomorrow after school? I want to start with Olly in the morning, see where he’s at. Then give him some rest and continue in the evening for a bit.”

Ava’s head shot up and she wore a massive grin. “Yeah that’d be cool.” She spoke as the initial shock wore off. She loved her mom, she really did. But she never let her help out or do anything meaningful around the house. Jocelynn treated her like an young adult and Ava loved that.

Richie had been eyeing their interaction. There was no doubt if Jocelynn was good with youngsters. Ava adored this woman and that made this rock star a tad bit suspicious. He had to look out for his kid at all times. As Ava told the woman a joke Jocelynn threw her head back in laughter. Richie grinned at her throaty laugh. Getting up from the lounge bed he strolled over to the edge of the pool.

“Uh oh Lynn. Watch out, dad usually tries to dunk everyone under water.” Ava said loudly as she noticed her dad’s movements. Moments later he jumped in and immediately went after his daughter. Ava shrieked as she tried to get away but Richie was too fast and grabbed her shoulders. She barely had enough time to suck in a breath before he pushed her downward.

Seconds later she came up and wiped the water off her eyes. Focusing again she smiled mysteriously. Richie was about to ask her why as he felt delicate hands on his shoulders and oxygen was taken away from him. Ava and Lynn both swam away as quickly as they could and rushed out of the pool. Just as Lynn was pulling herself up on the edge she heard swearing behind her as Richie resurfaced. A grin was spread on her face and she took off on the lawn, knowing a payback would come.

Richie growled as he watched her dart away. Knowing he wasn’t going to be able to get her back at this moment he shook his head, left the pool and laid down on the lounge bed, face down. Ava and Lynn stared in shock. Well Ava stared in shock, Lynn was torn between shock and arousal. His ass sure looked good, especially at his age...not that he was old or anything.

He’s your boss, you idiot! She scolded herself. Taking the towel from the futon she sat down and picked up one of the stashed bottles of water. Chugging half of it down she smiled at Ava. “I enjoyed myself Ava, thanks for asking me to join you. I’ll head back into the guest house to get settled and I presume your bedtime is nearing since it’s a school night.”  She spoke at the youngest amongst them. Ava nodded silently. “Just come and find me when you get home. We’ll play with Olly a bit.”

“I will, thanks.” Ava started. “Good night Lynn.” She’d gotten up from the foot end of the lounge bed her dad was on and hugged Jocelynn.

Richie had turned around and sat up at this. “Have a good night Jocelynn. Just come down to the kitchen tomorrow if you’re hungry. I haven’t had the chance to stock the fridge of the guest house.”

“Thanks Richie, will do. Have a good night both.” She smiled and rounded the corner back to the guest house. Ava turned to face her dad as Lynn was out of earshot.

“You totally like her.” She said, placing her hands at her sides. Richie raised his brows. “Oh don’t give me that dad! I like her too though, you should totally ask her for a date.” Getting up from the lounge bed she leaned down to kiss her dad on the cheek. “I’m gonna take a shower and head to bed. G’night dad.” She waltzed away, leaving Richie staring at his daughter, completely speechless.

The sun was barely up and Lynn was already keeping Rosa company in the kitchen. Rosa insisted she made a hearty breakfast as Lynn would be burning a lot of energy. Trying to decline politely she ended up with eggs, bacon and toast on her plate anyway. Dressed in faded jeans, a light grey v-neck tank top and her brown leather boots she munched on the large amount of food.

“Thanks again Rosa, this was wonderful.” She spoke as she gulped down the last of her black coffee and rose to leave.

Rosa turned around from cleaning the stove. “It was no problem Miss Reid. Miss Ava won’t even join me for another thirty minutes and I never expect  Mister Richie before noon. I like the company in the morning.”

“Well it most certainly was my pleasure.” Lynn replied. “Have a good day.” Turning on her heel she moved out of the house and across the field towards the barn. Olly peeked his head out of the stable as soon as he heard the door open. Lynn walked over and pet him as she prepared his oats.

About two hours later she was ready to get him washed and back into the paddock. Without much trouble she did some basic groundwork with the gelding. Letting him follow her. Stop when she deed. Increase speed as she asked him. She finished with introducing him to a headstall and saddle pad. Keeping the headstall in front of him he moved closer and without any pressure took the bit into his mouth. Jocelynn had praised him for his and the horse seemed satisfied.

Attaching his lead rope to the barn she grabbed a pad and stroked his back with it before settling it in its proper place. Oliver had barely moved a muscle at that, being more excited to get to work than scared. Handing him a treat she praised him again. Making sure it was a positive experience.

Walking him over to the washing place she once again attached the lead rope and turned on the hose. Barely seconds later she was cursing words she had forgotten she knew about and quickly turned off the hose. It was too late already anyway, she was soaked. Groaning in annoyance she heard a chuckle behind her.

Pointing an accusing finger she growled. “You!”

Richie raised his hands in defense, grinning widely. “Just payback darlin.” Jocelynn tried her best to keep a gentle smile off her face. “I made sure to adjust the ending of the hose before I went to bed yesterday.”

“If I weren’t so pissed off I would probably tell you that it was a pretty good payback.” She spoke in a serious tone, turning around and fixing the hose. Seconds later she was done and turned around ready to fire off a stream of water but Richie was already too far away. “I’ll get you back you know!” She yelled and Richie only laughed. Maybe this will be fun after all.

Chapter Three

The drive from Livermore to Los Angeles was a fun one. The sun was up and her rental, a black GMC SUV, was a joy to drive. Stopping at a diner on the side of the interstate she enjoyed a good old fashioned burger with home fries before proceeding to the big city. After paying the check, she hopped back in her rental and was heading back down the interstate. Singing along loudly to Springsteen’s ‘Born To Run’ she smiled.
Just another Jersey musician, no big deal...If only it were that simple, she thought with a sigh.

It was another two hours to the Sambora house, her navigation system estimated. Plenty of time to sing along to the best American rock songs and unwind.

Jocelynn had had a restless night. It wasn’t as much the father she was worried about but more the image the press made of him. He had been in rehab a couple of times and gotten a DUI with his daughter present in the car. She knew not to believe all the gossip but these things were pretty straightforward. Being a photographer she knew the scumbags that were amongst celebrity photography. She had been in an argument with one or two in the past before she chose to cut down on the regular studio portraits and focus on concerts and other action photography, one being rodeos. The rodeo was where she learned to be a better rider, having been taught English riding since the age of 6 western was a world of difference. Being able  to do the riding had improved her photographs too.

She wondered if Richie would remember her from all these years ago. Shaking that thought from her mind she realized she was on the outskirts of L.A. already. Having been there many times before in her 38 years of being on this planet she was not struck by the traffic.

Thirty-eight years ago Jocelynn was born as the only child of Donathan and Tabby Reid in Philly. After high school she moved to New York for NYU and completed a photography course there which led to many internships with big photographers and a lot of Starbucks runs. By the time she was 23 she started freelancing and never stopped since that moment. Having built a great client base in mostly internet media but some newspapers and magazines, she’d been with Rolling Stone for a bit before going solo. Still they contacted her once in a while for a shoot or concert and payed her very well for it. Once every few months she took some time off to visit Jack and Relda but also go down to L.A. for more business meetings.

Jack had told her more than once that one day she would have to slow down. Lynn always laughed it off. Though she knew that time was nearing now. One of the main reasons she came to help the couple as soon as Jack called her. No questions asked. It was her escape from New York’s hectic city lifestyle.

Turning into the long winding driveway, Jocelynn was taken aback. The house was huge! A true Southern California abode indeed. There was a big iron gate at the front of the driveway, driving up to it she rolled down the window. Pressing the sole button on the big pillar she waited patiently.

“Hello?” It was a male voice coming through the speakers. Would it be him?

Lynn cleared her throat. “Hello, I’m Jocelynn Reid. I came down here to help Ava with her new horse?” With each spoken word her voice got quieter. What if he doesn’t remember?

“Oh good you’re here. Come on through, just park next to the other cars out front.”  The voice spoke again and sure enough the gates opened and Lynn drove the GMC through it.
The driveway was surrounded by trees and grass. Two more cars were lined up near the massive house. Parking the rental next to the Hummer and Aston she frowned. Those were some seriously expensive cars and yet she preferred an old Mustang or Camaro.

“Jocelynn you’re here!”

A blonde teenage girl threw open the wooden doors of the house’s entrance and skidded over to the rental car extending her hand.

“I’m Ava. You’re really gonna let me help you train Olly?” Lynn smiled at the large grin the girl was wearing. Her handshake was firm, she wasn’t shy in the least.

“Yeah it’s your horse little girl. After he becomes accustomed to a saddle and rider you’re gonna be doing most of the work.”

“So I will pay you a nice salary while my daughter does all the work? Good strategy.” A rough voice spoke from behind Ava and Lynn lifted her face to meet the man’s eyes. Her breath hitched in her throat. Damn he still looks hot.

Richie was momentarily caught off guard at the beautiful woman in front of him. Ava was the first to break the silence. “But Dad… I don’t need a paycheck from you. I’ll just ask for your credit card if I want something.” She smiled cheekily at the fifty-something year old behind her before bursting out in laughter.

Jocelynn laughed softly before extending her hand. “I’m Jocelynn Reid. It’s nice to meet you. The house looks wonderful.”

Richie snapped out of his gaze and shook her outstretched hand. “Pleasure is all mine darlin’. That name sounds awfully familiar though. Sorry if I can’t remember exactly.” He drawled, brow furrowed as he tried to remember.
Lynn grinned. “That’s actually more than I was hoping for. We’ve met briefly at a New York show a couple years back. No big deal if you don’t remember. It’s a long time ago and it was only a couple of minutes. Now not to be nosy but I’d love to meet the young lady’s horse.”

Ava’s eyes widened in excitement. “I’ll walk you to the barn. He’s so pretty, I’ve taken him for a few walks on his halter already. He's a real sweetie.”

If Lynn felt the guitarist’s eyes on her she would’ve felt uncomfortable and blushed but she was too happy hearing  the girl’s words. She clearly already took a liking to the horse and had taken the time to bond.

“You two go ahead. I’ll tell Rosa to prepare dinner for three. Do you like Mexican food, Jocelynn?” Richie spoke as he broke his stare. Ava was already a few steps ahead of Jocelynn, who turned around at his words.

Smiling she nodded, “Mexican sounds great if it’s not too much effort. I’m starving. We shouldn’t be too long.”

Richie nodded curtly and said something about being a good host before retreating into the house, deep in thought about the woman who would be sleeping in his guest house for the next few weeks.

Oliver’s Whiz was a red dun gelding and he made a sound of acknowledgment as Ava entered the barn. The younger girl took a carrot from a bag in the corner and walked over to the half opened gate of the horse’s stable. She had been telling Lynn stories on the walk over, quickly asking permission to call her Lynn.

As Lynn ran her hand over the horse’s nose she smiled. It sure was a sweet horse, calm and affectionate. Ava had disappeared into the tack room and came out with a leather halter. The  silver on the dark leather was shining and was obviously cleaned not too long ago.

“That’s a real pretty show halter, Ava. How about we feed him and let him be for now. It’s time for dinner and we’ll have plenty time to work with him tomorrow.” Jocelynn spoke.

Ava nodded. “Alright. Rosa makes the best Mexican food you’ve ever tasted.” Her eyes sparkled. “Will you come for a swim after dinner? If you’re too tired from your drive that’s fine too. I just thought I’d ask.” She looked at the floor. Mentally preparing for rejection. Adults never wanted to swim with her. She should’ve known better.

Jocelynn smiled. “A swim would be great. I am tired but swimming will help me relax too wouldn’t it?” Ava nodded happily. “Now come on, let’s not keep your dad and Rosa waiting any longer.” Both of them gave Olly another rub on the nose before heading out of the barn and into the large house. Dinner with the Sambora family... At least Ava took a liking to her.

Chapter Two

Bay Area, April 2012.

Jumping up from the ground a teenage boy widened his bright blue eyes and a grin spread across his face. His dark wash jeans were covered in dusty sand and he had rosy cheeks from being in the sun taking care of the horses.

“Aunt J!” He exclaimed happily throwing his arms around the woman’s neck. At thirteen he was about as tall as his aunt and she shook her head at his figure. “You coming to ride?”

Jocelynn Reid pulled away and laughed. “Hey Tim, next time you’re gonna be taller than me young man.” She grinned. “I didn’t come here just for a ride but we could go out after I talked to your mom if you’d like?” Her light brown long hair was strung together by a loose braid that was slung over her shoulder and ended just above her nipple.

“Timothy Jones stop harassing Jocelynn and get inside. No riding unless your homework is all done!” A mature female stood on the porch of the large house with her hands in her sides pretending to be disciplinary. Lynn knew it was just because she was there she wanted to set an example, hoping one day it would help the other woman with her own offspring.

Relda Jones was 6 years Lynn’s senior and took her under her wing. “You’ve heard your mom Tim. Let’s get inside so we can take the horses for a ride later.” Pushing him gently towards the house she followed behind with a wide grin. It may not have been her sole reason for the visit but it sure as hell was fun to ride once in a while.

I had been 15 years ago that she and Relda met in a bar in New York. Both fascinated by a local rock band. Relda had met her husband around the same time. A Californian cowboy with his own ranch and trail riding business. He did tours around the area for groups and everyone else who was interested. They have been a perfect couple ever since, a unit.

With Timothy in his room upstairs working on his homework the two women sat in the kitchen with a mug of steaming coffee in front of them. Relda was the first to speak. “So Jack called you out?” Her brown eyes squinted a little as she frowned.

Jocelynn sighed. “Sweetie you’re 7 months pregnant. You can’t go helping him with the training. He called and said he needed my help, I came down here. I love working with the horses you know that. What bothers me the most and how hush-hush he was about all this. Wouldn’t tell me a damned thing.” As a freelance photographer Jocelynn could pretty much take as much time off as she wanted unless there was anything scheduled beforehand.

Relda threw her hands up in defense. “I ain’t spillin’ either. Jack is down by the corral if you wanna talk to him. You probably should though. Just so you know what you’re gonna be working with. It’ll be a lot of fun though, I can tell ya that much.” With a sweet smile Lynn was basically dismissed and after a last gulp of coffee she changed out of her high heeled boots and slid into a riding pair of western boots. Letting the bootcut jeans fall loosely over them it was just a pair of ray-ban’s on the bridge of her nose and she was a new woman.

The jeans were a light wash and her brown leather square toed boots matched perfectly with the suede shirt she was wearing.  After walking for a couple of minutes she began rounding the corner behind the barn and saw Jack with a palomino Quarter Horse working on a spin. The trail rides may be his favorite part of his job but training the horses made him the most money. She grinned as she horse moved flawlessly and Jack enthusiastic reaction to it. The man’s sandy blonde shoulder length hair falling over his face as he patted he horse’s neck in appreciation.

“Looked good Jacky.” She noted as she neared the corral. Jack’s head shot up and a smile graced his lips. “That’s one beauty ya got there.”

The man clicked with his tongue and guided the horse to the fence of the corral letting Jocelynn rub her hand over the palomino’s nose. “It’s good to see ya woman. Been far too long since you visited West Coast.” A grin passed Lynn’s face.  “Timothy taller than you now?”

“Nope but he will be next time. I think we’re about even right now. He’s a good looking kid too Jacky, ya sure he’s yours?” The female grinned slyly at the man’s faux hurt expression. Ever since Relda and Jack got together she’d been the man’s younger sister. She was close to Relda but Jack was exactly like her in so many different personality traits it scared them both at first.

“Yeah keep sayin’ that. I assume Relda didn’t give you any answers in regards to why I needed your help?” He noted as he slid off the horse’s back and gave it another pat and rubbed it’s ears where he just removed the headstall. Jack didn’t just get a horse show ready, he taught them manners too. Following their leader at all times was one of them. Lynn had always admired him for that. His horses were some of the best in the country and yet well mannered, no biting, kicking or other unwanted behavior. They could walk with a correctional bit as well as without any bridle at all.  “Let me get this boy in his paddock and I tell ya all about it.” He winked and Lynn smiled as she nodded. All the paddocks were occupied and Lynn wondered if he was understaffed that he needed her help now.

“Can I help with anything?” The woman spoke as Jack kept himself busy taking the saddle to an assigned room. Taking the hose from the wall she hosed the excess sweat off the horse and dried it with a handy tool before letting it loose in his paddock. The gelding took off and soon rolled around in the sand. Lynn shook her head in laughter and turned to find her non biological brother.

Jack was putting all the tack away in it designated location in the tack room and cleaning it as he did so. He just put the bridle away as she came in. “Lynn I’m gonna need to ask you to keep everything I tell you between the three of us for this job.” Jack spoke seriously. Lynn’s eyes widened at this statement.

“Jack of course I can promise you that. You know me.” She leaned against a stool and cocked her hip to the left but straightening once realizing her movement. “Anything you need. You both are family after all.”

He male smiled at her statement and sighed. “There’s a job to be done in L.A. it starts tomorrow. I need you to go out there for a couple of weeks and do it. A friend of a friend recommended me to this guy and he truly wants only the best.” Jocelynn nodded. “His ex wife bought their daughter a horse. A gelding. And the girl is only fourteen with very little riding experience. At least by far not enough to train it. We’re talking three year old Quarter Horse here. I need you there to train the horse with her assisting you from time to time so that when you’re done and you leave they’ve already bonded.”

Jocelynn’s eyes shone. “That sounds perfect. If she has at least some experience she can help me out a bunch and I’ll make sure the two bond properly. I take it a place to crash has been taken care of?”

Jack nodded. “You’re staying with the kid’s father in their guest house. It’ll be for your private use so don’t worry about that. It’ll be pretty basic so I have no worries. The reason I wanted you for this is that how good Ralph is with the horses, he’s horrible when it comes to kids and she will be a big part of this training.” There was a silence between the two of them as Lynn processed the information given to her.

“I’ll go fetch Tim now, promised him to go for a ride. Which horses should we take?” She spoke quietly. “I don’t want to know who we’re dealing with yet. That might turn into another conversation and Tim was looking forward to a trail ride.”

The man grinned. “Take Viper Dun It and Freckles Playboy. Viper’s good for you, great horse but needs a steady rider. Freckles is one of Tim’s favorites. You know the terrain good enough right?”

Lynn nodded. “Yeah that’ll be fine, been around here plenty. I’ll go fetch Tim. See you at dinner?”

After some more talk about the current horses in training she went to get the teenager and saddle the horses. Viper was a grullo Quarter Horse stud and Freckles an Appaloosa gelding almost completely white except some black spots. Teaching Tim some new tricks along the path they crossed a fallen tree. Seeing the adventure and encouraging stare from the boy she made a kissy sound to get the stud in a gentle lope.

Taking a leap they passed the tree with ease and landed in the soft grass. Viper let his excitement show at his achievement with the lift of his behind sending Tim in a fit of laughter as he was close behind her. Also taking the obstacle with ease.

Three hours later they arrived back on the ranch and made sure the horses were well taken care of. After a quick shower and snack for both they were released in their paddocks just in time for the regulated feeding time.

Tim had some stories to share about rides he took with his father and sometimes clients. How he got to help out some people and teach them the basics with pride. She could only image the pride his father must have felt. There was little doubt that Tim wouldn’t take over the family business. A love for horses was in his blood after all.

Dinner passed uneventful. Tim giving his parents a detailed run through of the afternoon ride and being specific about the jump they took. Both adults shining with pride for their son. Who after his storytelling went to his room for some videogame and then bed. Leaving Lynn with an expectant face between Relda and Jack.

“So is someone going to tell me who I’m going to be helping tomorrow? Might not be a good idea to stand in front of the poor man’s house shell shocked.” She spoke laughing but quieted at the look that passed between the couple. “What? Is it someone that big?”

“Sweetie.” Relda began. “It’s Ava. Ava Sambora.”

All the color drained from Jocelynn’s face. “Ava Sambora? As in Heather Locklear?” At which Jack nodded quietly.

Which meant the father, the man’s guest house she would be staying at. Was Richie Sambora.

Well Shit.
